The holiday is over :( Now it's just writing my thesis and attending a conference.
Heat has been making me very cranky the past week. I've been getting annoyed at stupid things, from american humour (specifically, when people say "nah, I'm just kidding" a second after their joke. Really? Did you think you were being subtle?) to my own voice (I am starting to hear my accent. OMFG, aussie accents are awful). And those pedistrian crossings that keep saying "wait, wait" can go fuck themselves.
I don't want to attend another stupid conference. I want to go home, rug up in a doona, bitch about how cold it is, and get pawed in the face by my dog. And eat cereal and bread that isn't so fucking sweet. Even the damn wholemeal here is sweet! And drink loose leaf tea. Hot tea. None of that iced tea crap (with exception to Argo Tea. I wish they were in Australia).
Thankfully, my final accommodation (a college room) has great aircon so I am cooling down and losing my temper (until I walk out in the heat like a few minutes ago). Even better since tomorrow and Saturday are forecast to be 39C (102F). The room is quite nice (I say this because it's not hot) and the second bed isn't made so it looks like I have the room all to myself. Yay!
Now that I'm cool, I'm looking forward to the conference. Glancing at the program I think there will be a lot of great talks. But they aren't going to feed us. I'm a little worried about that. The website says there will be shuttle buses to get lunch. Seriously? The organisers choe a venue that wasn't convenient for food? Given that there are eight concurrent sessions everyday, that is a lot of people to shuttle around during a lunch break. Not sure what I'm going to do about breakfast, though I do have an emergency cookie stash. Cheap and nasty but they'll do.
My talk is on Monday afternoon, the second-last day. It's pretty much the same as the talk from the other conference so I haven't really been practicing. Although part of the reason I haven't been practicing is because of my accent...
